Purposes

Why We Exist

First Presbyterian Church, North Shore exists by the grace of God to make more people more like Christ as we exalt Jesus, edify His followers, and extend His Kingdom on the North Shore of Boston and far beyond.

We encourage all of our members to make worship, growth in the Faith, and serving for His Kingdom’s sake a priority. As God the Father invites us into dynamic relationship with Him through His Son, and enables us by His Spirit, He leads us in these responsibilities as His people.

Exalt [verb] = to hold someone or something in very high regard; think or speak highly of. Synonyms: praise, revere, worship.

FPC desires to exalt God by encouraging personal, family, and corporate worship that is accessible, authentic, vibrant, and relevant. Exalting God happens as we behold His matchless value and respond to His incomparable worth with both our lips (what we say to and about Him) and our lives (how we seek to live with and for Him). God is always worthy of our worship. Always.

Gathering on Sundays is an important part of exalting God as we respond to His glory together in songs of praise, prayers of confession and thanks, and attentive listening to His Word. Then, we go out worshipping into the particular places in the world to which God has called us: our homes, our schools, jobs, gyms and neighborhoods. To glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This is our first purpose!

Edify [verb] = to instruct or improve morally or intellectually; to build up spiritually. Synonyms: educate, develop, train.

FPC aims to edify Christ’s followers by making disciples whose hearts are being renewed by God’s Spirit, whose minds are being renewed by God’s Word, and whose lives are being renewed after the image of God’s Son. As God’s people living in God’s world, seeking to advance God’s Kingdom in our particular day and age, we recognize our need and responsibility to be prepared in how we think and how we live.

Our children’s ministry, youth ministry, adult education, and small groups are just a few of the ways that we try to edify God’s people.

Extend [verb] = to cause to cover a larger area; to make longer or wider. Synonyms: enlarge, increase, lengthen, widen, deepen, broaden.

FPC seeks to extend God’s Kingdom in our own hearts, homes, cities, country and around the world through words and acts of love and mercy. We take very seriously Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples of all nations” and we hope to start at our own doorsteps. The Kingdom of our Loving God ever pushes outward in a centrifugal force, extending from our own hearts from the moment we trust in Jesus for our salvation to more and more women, children and men who are in need of the hope that only He can give.

As we have been caught up in the centrifugal force of God’s love we long to extend His Kingdom through local and international missions and mercy ministries.
