Theme: Do you ever tune people out when they speak to you? Assuming that you already know what someone is saying, do you stop paying attention? Do you ever do that to God? Paradoxically, maybe there is no Scripture where we seem to miss God’s words more than in Genesis 1. But thankfully, in His grace, He reverberates his creative words. Will we hear Him?

Text: Genesis 1:1-2

Theme: In the beginning of his word God identifies himself in a pattern that would have been recognized in the Ancient Near Eastern world. It is a form used in treaties and includes identifying himself as the great king and telling of his mighty works so as to command the allegiance of his subjects. God wanted his people Israel to know that their redeemer who took them out of Egypt is the very same God who made heaven and earth. From the beginning God draws his people into covenant relationship with him so that they can dwell forever with him. Here is the beginning of the end. All this points to Jesus who is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega.

Text: Matthew 2:1-12

Theme: There is a spectrum of responses to the humble birth of baby Jesus. For some, Christmas elicits mere sentimentality, while for others, mention of news of the Baby’s birth draws out resistant anger. But still others respond with humble wonder and awe. Matthew’s story of the seeking magi illuminates these three responses, but in the end, it shows that even diligent seekers are themselves sought. How will we respond this Christmas?
